A South coast derby against Worthing for the first time in the league since the 2008-09 season and what a spectacle. Will Knight made three of changes to the squad with Alex Hankins making his debut for the unavailable Ash Chirima at tight-head prop. Whilst Dylan Lawley came back into the team, leaving the impressive Archie Cleeve on the bench. Wayne Dugan came in at outside center replacing the injured Tanie Naduva. An almost Summers day greeted both sides as they run out at Rugby Park. The traveling faithful were noisy!
With Worthing starting the brighter, Havant were to score first through a fantastic run from wing Jerome Rudder on seventeen minutes. A 2nd try of the season for young fullback Ben Griffin a minute later extended the lead further, with Jacob Knight being uncharacteristic with the boot Havant led 0-10.
Worthing pulled themselves back into the match with two quick penalties but a trade mark Sean Shepherd try on thirty-nine minutes, and, conversion from Jacob Knight gave Havant a 6-17 lead going into the break.
Halftime Worthing 6 Havant 17
Havant were pegged back just after halftime with a Worthing try but really got going scoring the next two tries from Dylan Lawley (bonus point) and Sean Shepherd showing the crowd how much they dominated the set piece, Havant led 13-27. Another Worthing try and the game was back to a seven point game. Havant just could not stamp their authority on the game although they dominated for periods.
Harry Carr scored after a great line for the sixth try of the afternoon and Havant didn’t look back, although Worthing themselves got bonus points when Havant slipped off tackles at the end.
Fulltime Worthing 34 Havant 40
Thoughts from Head--coach Will Knight after the game
"Another really positive performance and one in which we were the dominant side throughout. Our set piece was a challenge for Worthing from the start and we looked dangerous when we got the ball wide. We have to be disappointed that we allowed them to come away with two bonus points because in reality their scores all came from avoidable errors on our part. We have greater tests to come but the squad have stepped up well in the first two games."
